The name Bogotá has origin in the indigenous word Bacatá, name of the capital of the Zipas, which means “fence outside of the farm". The town also received the nickname of Muequetá (field or savanna of the farm") and that of Funza (powerful male"). The predominant religion in Colombia is the Catholic, 92% of the national population affirm to profess the Catholicism or are registered as Catholic, but in that same population there can be indifferent religious's groups. This calculations take into account the number of Catholic baptisms but not necessarily reflective the number of believers.

Until the constitution of 1991 the Catholicism was the official religion of the state, the country was consecrated to Jesus Sacred Heart and in a recurrent way the columnists use that fact to refer to “the country of the sacred heart". 8% of the remaining population make part of other religious communities as Protestants, or of  Protestant origin, witness of Jehová, sects of Buddhist and Taoist origin, Muslims, Jews or natural religions, all with a minority representation

The ethnic diversity in Colombia is the result of the mixture of Indigenous Amerindians, Spanish colonists and African slaves, what gives place to a population of mestizos, white, mulattos and blacks, as well as to that of black and Amerindian, or zambo mixture. The proportions of the different ethnic groups vary flagrantly according to the region. Today, only  1% of the Colombians can approximately be identified totally as Amerindian taking  the language as its base. Also Exists a minority presence, but not less important, of migrants of other ethnoses in Colombia like Arabs, Jews, chineses, and other European countries as Italy, England and Germany, as well as  the United States and other Latin American countries (Ecuador, Argentina, Peru and the Antilles)

Colombia is the third more crowed country in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico.
